Not that they need any introduction, but the crew at EarthQuaker Devices just keeps on crushing it, and although today’s pedal might not be their newest release, it’s on par with everything else in their vast catalog of effects pedals. The Spires is a double fuzz inspired by a classic fuzz pedal AND a now-discontinued piece of EarthQuaker gear. Easy to use, fun to play and inspiring to hear, let’s check out this beast, shall we?
Their are 2 channels you get to select from on the Spires: the first is the Green Channel, which is based on the rare late-60’s Rosac Electronic Nu-Fuzz. On this side, the full-on fuzz is present all the time, featuring a gain control and a Tone knob, which gives you a wide range from big and warm to sizzling and wicked fuzzy. While not an exact replica, this side is sonically spot-on, created from an original pedal itself.
The Red channel is the EQD Dream Crusher Fuzz with a twist: this one features silicon diodes inside, making it more stable and less temperature sensitive, for a longer-lasting and more reliable addition to your board. There’s a knob for gain here as well, plus a Fuzz knob to control the very usable and dynamic distortion. These two are switchable on-the-fly via a footswitch, allowing to to set them for two different types of sound and access each as soon as you need it.
Loud? Check. Fuzzy? Check. Perfect for any musical situation? Not hardly, but it just might be for fuzz-lovers throughout the universe. Taking two different fuzz circuits and smashing them into one tasty enclosure, EarthQuaker Devices has done it once more, to the delight of eardrums everywhere. Be sure to check out their website for more unique-sounding effects, and be sure to watch the demo below to hear just what this guy is capable of doing. Cheers!
