Retro-Sonic Analog DelayIf you’ve ever had the opportunity to play one, you know that the Boss DM-2 is one of the finest analog delay pedals ever created. While there have been many attempts to recreate the vintage tones of this sought-after piece of equipment, most have fallen short in some way or another…until now. Not sure how they did it, but the folks at Retro-Sonic have managed to create a pedal that has everything we love about the DM-2, plus some more tasty analog options and sounds as well.

Repeat Rate starts off the control section of the Analog Delay, and controls the overall delay time. There’s a footswitch that adds some fun into this pedal as well, letting you select from Long or Short delay modes, with a max of about 800ms. Intensity lets you adjust the level of the delayed effect, while Echo controls the number of times the delay repeats. Pretty standard controls here, but extremely useful nonetheless.

The Tone control (or hi-cut filter) is what really makes this metallic box stand out from its peers. When dialed back, you get some wicked dark, ambient, classic-analog delay tones; crank it up a bit, the echoes become clear and punchy, and a little more digital-sounding, but without any harshness. The range they managed to capture is truly astounding, making this one for the experimenter in us all.

Using 2 4096 stage BBDs, the RS Analog Delay gives you quiet operation, longer-than-normal analog delay times and lush, warm repeats that will put a giant smile smack dab in the middle of your face (and your audience’s, too, if they know what they’re hearing). This is the first Retro-Sonic pedal we’ve had the privilege to test, and now that we have a taste for what they can do, we can’t wait to check out more gear from them in the near future. Check back for more demos and reviews throughout 2017, and, of course, make sure you watch the video below to hear some great sounds coming out of this delay.
