Sometimes, your rig just need an extra bit of sparkle, a push to kick it into high gear and get to that one sweet sonic spot you’ve been hearing on your favorite recordings for years, but never seem to be able to quite achieve. In the case of today’s pedal, that magic ingredient is a Boost pedal. While there are a ton of these available on the market today, each one is unique in design, output and color, and I’ve found it to be quite entertaining to try multiple boosts with different amps to see what works best. Hailing from Pasadena, CA, the Boost 90 Clean Drive is a rock and rolling take on a clean boost, brought to you by Caswell Modern Electronics.
As with most boost pedals, the Boost 90 has only one control knob, which makes it really, really easy to use (really). In this instance, however, the more you crank the lone numbered knob, you get more boost, of course, but you also get an increased level of gain as well. When you get to about the 6-7 range, a cool thing happens: it’s almost like there are two signals, one clean and one dirty, being mixed together. The initial strum or pluck from the guitar sounds clean, but has a bit of a dirty finish. Not sure how CME accomplished that, but it is a rad feature. As you keep turning it up and up, the dirt gets dirtier, but retains that clean overtone, creating a truly unique musical experience.
Not just another average clean boost to blast out the eardrums of everyone hanging out in the coffee shop, the Boost 90 is a real tone enhancer, as well as a boost, for a sort of 2-in-1 pedal.
