Since I started up this little review adventure, I have reviewed a couple pieces of gear from EC Pedals, and they keep surprising me with each new encounter. These guys don’t make pedals for the weak-hearted or yacht-rockers, they are built for loud clubs and loud guitars, and today’s pedal is on par with that philosophy as well. The Angry Ape is a big, bold, distorted fuzz pedal, and one that can perform a multitude of functions as well.
The Gain, Tone and Level controls are your basic run-of-the-mill knobs on a fuzz of this size and type. The Tone has a great sonic range, though, going from dark and seething to bright and cutting in no time flat, and the amount of volume output here ensures you’re not going to get lost in any mix. The coolest feature of the Angry Ape has got to be the Gate knob, which controls the character of the fuzz, and opens up the tonal possibilities with a quickness. Adjustments on this control result in a range from a crisp, tight fuzz sound up to an un-gated, messy, gritty, squelchy fuzz, capable of producing some unpredictable sounds and off-the-wall sonic adventures.
This pedal is one that needs to be loved, coddled a little and maybe even petted occasionally, while you try to figure out what sounds she’s gonna produce next. Angry Ape is both a good title and great description of this pedal and it’s abilities, as this thing will get out of control in a hurry, and if you’re not prepared or careful, it could just rip your amplifier to smithereens. EC Pedals keeps cranking out these fun and exciting stompboxes, so make sure you see what else they’ve got, and what sounds lay in store for YOU.
