Devi Ever FX has been one of the leading companies in effects pedal fuzz now for years, especially since our friends Dwarfcraft Devices bought them a few years ago. I have reviewed a number of their pedals here on POTD (Big Distortion Sound Machine, God Zilla, and I love each one differently every time they appear on my doorstep. One of my favorites is the Soda Meiser (it’s one of Nels Cline’s as well), and just when I thought they couldn’t improve on it, they come out with the Shoe Gazer, which adds a SECOND fuzz onto the Soda Meiser for a dreamy ball of fuzzy bliss.
The Shoe Gazer is made up of two separate Devi Ever fuzzes: the left side is the Torn’s Peaker, the right side is the Soda Meiser. Both feature simple control setups and huge sounds, and when put together, they will obliterate anything in their path. The Torn’s Peaker side features a heavy, ballsy, super-distorted fuzz tone, with nice compression and a TON of sustain. This side is the heavier of the two, and adds that extra bit of crunch and punch when both sides are engaged together. The Soda Meiser is a glitchy, high-octave fuzz that can do nice, warm tones as well as big, fat, scary stuff as well. The range in the Pregain knob is HUGE, with a lot of spectral diversity and sonic unpredictability. The only thing missing here, in my opinion, is the awesome Chaos switch found on the solo Soda Meiser. One of my favorite features of that pedal, it’s lack of inclusion on the Shoe Gazer was disappointing, and I hope it shows up on future versions.
That being said, when you click these two sides on at the same time, be ready to be floored. Your tone has absolutely no choice but to turn on you and attack, in the best way, of course. Thick, dirty, nasty fuzz comes ripping out of the gates, combining the 70’s distortion sounds of the Torn’s Peaker with the 24-bit-ish weirdness of the Soda Meiser, for a powerhouse fuzz that annihilates eardrums and sanity wherever it is found. If by some slim chance you love fuzz and haven’t checked out the Devi Ever site, do yourself a favor and get over there ASAP. The pedals they’re creating and the sounds they’re conjuring up are truly unique and truly spectacular, go see what they’ve got for you!
