When these pedals present themselves, I’m always astonished how the builders manage to pack so many options into such a small area, and how they came up with the ideas in the first place. Today’s pedal is a prime example of this feat, and holds nothing back as far as options and tonal joy: the Butch Fuzz/Overdrive/Boost from Escape Plan Pedals.

The Butch is basically a 3-In-1 pedal, with the small footprint size just a tad bigger than a Boss or similar pedal, making it convenient as well as diverse, and wicked powerful, too. Howl starts the controls off, and that just a fancy term for Volume, which there is plenty of on tap here. Bark is the second and final control knob (I love the simplicity, too) for the Butch, and it regulates the amount of drive or fuzz present in the effect. The lone toggle switch here has 2 distinct modes: Balls and Bones. Balls is more on the smoother side, able to produce some warm and tender, crunchy overdrive sounds, but also able to perform as a clean boost when the Bark is rolled back. The Bones selection moves the pedal in diode clipping, for an awesome fuzz sound, pushing the limits of distortion depending on how much Bark you add into the mix.

There are a lot of differing and useful settings to be had on this pedal, and 3 distinct but equally useful mode options as well. If you’re looking for a boost but want to add in a little crunch, this is your pedal. If you need a warm drive sound to push your amp just a little, or a lot, put it in Balls mode, crank the Bark and listen to it shine. If you want something heavy, fuzz, distorted and punchy, flick that switch into Bones mode and hang on tight, ’cause the Butch answers to no one, and will rip your face right off if you’re not careful (watch your ear, too!). Thanks again to Andy and Escape Plan Pedals for letting us demo this awesome, versatile and unique effect pedal. They’ve got a bunch of rad gear on tap, so make sure you go visit and say hi, and see what else they’ve got for you and your rig!
