Pedals that are rare and difficult to find information about can be frustrating, but kind of fun in the same way. Since there aren’t a lot of reviews or praise or negativity about a pedal, it makes it easy to clear your mind and write a truly unique review from one lone perspective: your own. One of these such pedals is the Shadow Boost/Drive from Morgan Amplification.
2 sides, 2 separate footswitches, 2 different tonal options. The Shadow Boost looks simple, and in a lot of ways it is, but there are some awesome tones pouring from it’s innards. The Right side seems to be the more powerful of the 2, making me believe it is closer to an overdrive than a boost. Good range in the Gain control knob, from a warm crunch up to a singing roar. The Left side is a great boost. Turn down the Gain and crank the volume, and your guitar and amp are instantly shiny and sparkling. Turn it up, and you are left with a smooth, low-gain drive sound, perfect for that extra little bit of push your tone might require.
Using these 2 sides together is where the Shadow Boost is really a monster. It takes a little bit of adjusting to get all the switches to work well both together and separately, but once you do, look out. Tons of different sonic options when these sides work in conjunction, really creating a smooth, crisp and inviting overdrive sound, which is both unique and familiar, somehow, at the same time.
Not much else to tell you about this guy, as information on the Interweb is extremely limited, like I said before. I only found one video on YouTube with any sound samples for this pedal, and it wasn’t very well made, so I had a completely clean slate going into this review. This is a cool pedal, and I’m curious why Morgan Amps wouldn’t have put these into more production, even just doing a couple hundred, at least. Not sure how many exist, but I only came across ONE other one that had sold on Reverb last year, so safe to say they’re pretty rare. If you come across one, though, pick it up without thinking twice – it’s a great 2-In-1.
