earthquaker devices afterneath reverbThe EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath is the chocolate and peanut butter of the pedal world. It uses a whole bunch of delays to make some crazy reverb sounds. It’s the best of both worlds.

A single note can become an entire soundscape through the Afterneath. It does really like higher frequencies, and can self-oscillate into awesomeness! It did take me a while to figure out what the knobs do. EQD also likes to give creative names for the controls. It adds to the cool factor in all their pedals.

Once you learn how to tame this beast, it can become an incredibly expressive pedal. A ton of really great parameters can be tweaked and dialed in with precision. It can do everything from basic hall or room reverbs to cascading “what did I just hear?” pads. This pedal is a head-turner.

Controls:
Length: This controls the length of the delays. Shorter counter-clockwise, longer clockwise.

Diffuse: This is basically the attack. In my mind, it’s how noticeable the initial attack of the note is. Is it more defined or slurred.

Dampen: This is the tone/characteristic knob. It goes brighter or darker.

Drag: This is kind of like a time control. How fast or how slow the delays are. This is a very sensitive knob (maybe because of my active electronics), and is a lot of fun to play around with.

Reflect: This is the number of regenerations. If it’s turned up, it will self-oscillate…kind of a lot, and it’s awesome!

Mix: Wet/Dry mix, but it doesn’t go 100% wet, which I like.

It took me a while to really figure out how to use this pedal. It pairs great with modulation pedals and harmonizers. This pedal is at the end of my live signal chain, and it’s a lot of fun to stomp on and watch the audience react. It’s a blast and a half when another bandmate has one. It’s also great in a solo situation.
