We’re continuing our lineup run-through of the first four pedals from Bolt & Forge Analog Audio today. Coming to you from Yakima, Washington, we’re excited to jump back in and check out the third of FOUR effects they sent over, the Sawbones Optical Compressor. Bringing the funk and evening out the most fluctuating of signals, let’s see what it can do for you…
The Appaloosa is a noise-free, full-featured optical compressor that’s ideal at the beginning of your signal chain as a tone conditioner or boost. This compressor is transparent, meaning it leaves the sound of the rest of your rig intact while you dial in the compression level you want. Features here include a 100% all-analog signal path, hand-selected germanium diodes, studio-grade Mosfet opamps, metal-film resistors and audio-quality film capacitors.
A clean control allows you to mix in your uncompressed dry signal, so there’s none of the ‘dullness’ you might hear when using compression. While some compressor pedals include a ‘tone’ knob, the Sawbones offers a full, active tone stack with Bass and Treble controls to help you dial in the exact sound you’re after. A rail-to-rail, studio grade JFET opamp, combined with the ability to run up to 18 volts, means you’ll never have issues with headroom, either.
Hand-wired with true bypass switching, the Sawbones Optical Compressor has a familiar control section, but produces some really unique and intriguing sounds. An instant funk machine, this one will get THAT sound you’ve been searching for almost instantly. Be sure to head over to the Bolt & Forge website for more info, and be sure to check out our demo video below to hear this one inaction – cheers!
