I have played many, many different types of overdrive pedals in my day, and I still get a little giddy and excited when I find one that really rocks my world right from the get-go. The Warmer Drive from Andy Green Pedals did exactly that as soon as I plugged it in, and after about 15 minutes of jamming, I was hooked.
Onboard EQ. That’s the stuff, right there. Especially here, where the Treble, Mids and Bass controls have a HUGE range, and allow you to really manipulate the tone of the Warmer Drive. Even with the Treble rolled back and the Bass and Mids up a bit, your sound never gets too dark, dreary or muddy, always keeping to a nice, crisp edge, and when you slowly fade a bit more and more Treble in until it suits your liking, the Gain is never too harsh or shrill.
Speaking of which, the Gain on this thing is awesome. To classify this pedal as an overdrive is just on the border of being a lie, as it gets right up into Distortion territory when maxed out. Between 9:00 and Noon, it’s a lovely little boost…well, not little, so much, as it’s capable of adding 18db of boost to your signal! After 12:00, it starts to flow a bit more towards the raunchy side of things, and when it is cranked, it’s like 2 walls of amps stacked right behind you, no matter what kind you’re playing through (although it doesn’t hurt if it’s a warm tube amp, I’ll tell you what).
Playing with the EQ and Gain settings to find your perfect tone is a whole process, one that you’re sure to enjoy greatly, and one that will not leave you wanting more. There are a ton of great options in this big orange beauty, and since it’s powered by 18V instead of the usual 9V, it has huge headroom and tons of volume to really push your sound to the edge. Thanks so much to Andy Green and his Pedals for letting us demo this bad boy, keep an eye out for our review of the Daily Grind Distortion pedal of theirs as well, coming soon!
