We love exploring all the great effects pedals out there, obviously, but in order to do so, we need guitars. Today, the fine folks at Sweetwater have sent over a new gitbox for us to check out: the Squier 40th Anniversary Vintage Edition Jazzmaster. After the success of the J Mascis Signature Jazzmaster, it seems Squier and Fender wanted to delve deeper into their classic catalog for some wonderful reissues, and we are all about helping to spread the word…
Squier’s Vintage Edition series celebrates four decades of history with some gorgeous examples of Fender’s classic guitars and basses. From the gold anodized aluminum pickguard to the aged chrome hardware, this 40th Anniversary Jazzmaster is studded with striking style. It also boasts a classic Fender maple neck and fingerboard combo to add to this axe’s utterly timeless look. A pair of Fender-designed alnico single-coils equips this guitar with an authentic articulate Jazzmaster jangle, with spongy lows and brightly detailed highs. Stunning looks, comfortable playability, and incredible sound: the Vintage Edition series is a gold mine of 40 years of high-quality Squier instruments.
These Fender-designed single-coil Jazzmaster pickups give you the classic, hot-rocking tone that single-coils are known for. In addition, with vintage dual-circuit switching and volume and tone controls for each mode, you can explore many tonal options for lead and rhythm playing. And with the vintage-style bridge and “floating” vibrato, you can tap into all kinds of expressive, fun sonic stylings. So whether you’re playing jazz or starting a garage band, the Jazzmaster is appointed with the features that throw open the doors to years of sonic exploration and all-around good times — and isn’t that what music is all about?
Over the years, countless players have fallen in love with the neck of the Jazzmaster. The 40th Anniversary Vintage Edition Jazzmaster keeps that love affair going with a classic “C”-shaped profile, bolt-on maple neck that is instantly comfortable and playable. The 21 narrow tall frets retain the feel of a ’60s original. Experience the feel and response of the neck that made so many surf rock players of the early 1960s adopt the Jazzmaster as the genre’s go-to electric.
Other features include:
– Gold anodized aluminum pickguard and aged chrome hardware commemorate Squier’s 40th anniversary
– Lightweight and resonant poplar body
– Maple neck with a comfortable “C” shape
– Classic maple fingerboard with an easy-playing 9.5-inch radius
– Traditional Jazzmaster floating bridge and tremolo

Gear snobs be damned, this sub-$500 guitar sounds and plays fantastically. Squier and Fender really took this project and did something special with it, as anyone who picks up and plays this 40th Anniversary Vintage Edition Jazzmaster will attest to. In the demo video below, we mic’d up our Mesa/Boogie Mark Five: 25 head and mini-rec 1×12 cab to show off the range of this guitar – hope you enjoy the sounds and details we came up with.
