Mini pedals are everywhere! Space-saving, simple to control, great-sounding pedals are popping up from manufacturers across the world, and this one is a fantastic addition to the list. The Surf Drive comes to us from our friends PB&J Pedals in North Carolina, and is a great little overdrive pedal with a small footprint.
There’s really not much to this thing, but it will make your amp SING. Enclosed in a gorgeous teal, ocean blue box, the Surf Drive has surprisingly good range for being a one-knob pony. The only control is Volume, which also acts as a Gain knob of sorts, too. The more you crank it, the louder it gets, sure, but the crunchier it gets as well. Around 10:00, you get a boost to your guitar signal: clean, unaffected, crisp boost. Around noon, the crunch starts to come through, though in a subtle way. At 3:00, this thing is raging, pushing your amp to a warm, overdriven tone, and when it’s maxed, a beautiful drive sound is created, especially through a nice tube amp, where this pedal shines. A great thing about it is it’s interaction with your guitar’s controls: if you want to have the option of bug crunch at your disposal, just crank the Surf Drive up and use your guitar’s Volume knob to adjust the amount of distortion you want your signal to put out. Use it as a clean boost, or a badass overdrive, the choice is yours.
All this from a one-knob, 3.64″ x 1.52″ pedal? Yes. That is correct. The Surf Drive will fit absolutely anywhere you want it to, but will keep up with all of your Klons and Metal Zones as well. Another stellar product from Philip at PB&J Pedals (don’t forget to check out the Viper Drive and the Billy Goat Fuzz, too) – look for our review of their Sweet Clarity Junior coming soon as well, and go check out their website!
