The legendary Nobels ODR-1 Natural Overdrive has been a staple of session players around Nashville for years and years, gaining praise from the likes of Jerry Donahue, Guthrie Trapp, Carl Verheyen, John Shanks, Tim Pierce and more. This secret weapon works great for all musical genres, not just country, and will give your rig a truly natural-sounding overdrive, without a ton of coloration. Today, we’re bringing you a couple of version of this gem to explore: the ODR-1 BC and ODR-Mini.
The ODR-1 BC has the same layout as the original pedal, but with a hidden secret locked within. Pop open the battery cover and you get to choose either the original ODR-1 sound or to preset slightly reduced sub-bass, thanks to a Bass Cut switch. The pedal’s wide range is controlled by a SPECTRUM control tone pot. Turning the knob clockwise increases the bass and treble at the same time. Your midrange stays untouched in either direction to offer transparency with a pinch of warmth.
The ODR-Mini has the same tones as its legendary brother, just in a smaller package. Warm mid-gain tones are perfect for rock and blues, and you can get screaming hard rock sounds in a flash as well. The Mini features true-bypass switching, the Spectrum pot with mid-click and fluorescent pointers on the “GitD”(Glow-in-the-Dark) knobs. This little gem is guaranteed to be a BIG part of your sound and a SMALL part of your pedal board.
Nobels sent these two over so we could A/B em, and we’ve got the demo below for you to check out. Both sound incredible, and their individual attributes let you decide what best fits your sound and rig, with both being excellent choices all around. Thanks again to Nobels, these are truly fantastic overdrives – be sure to check out their website for more info, and don’t you sleep on that demo, now – cheers!!
