The effects coming from our Norwegian friends at Fjord Fuzz focus on, well, FUZZ, of course, but each unit has its own unique set of skills. After the BJØRN, BIFROST and ODIN V2, we didn’t know what to expect from today’s fuzz-filled pedal. Well, the BERSERK Fuzz (unsurprisingly) delivers once again, combining two vintage fuzz circuits with some modern updates, for a powerful and wide-ranging wall of fuzz…
Taking inspiration from the classic Fuzz Face and Tone Bender pedals of the ’60s, BERSERK places a simple, weirdly biased, single transistor gain stage preamp in front of the original circuit, getting rid of the buffer and wah compatibility issues that plague those early fuzz units. You can still get that thick, super sticky, asymmetric clipping, all while using your guitar’s volume knob to clean things up if needed.
The huge knob up top controls your Gain, while the smaller knobs are Volume and Thiccness. This one gives you either more bass or more clarity, while also impacting the Gain and Volume controls. The left push button is an Output Fix control, raising volume and presence while simultaneously correcting the output impedance. The second push button sets the Impedance itself, engaging not one but TWO space echo preamp gain stages, running in series. An internal trimpot lets you adjusts the impedance to your exacting specifications as well.
Turn down your guitar’s volume knob, or use a volume pedal in front of the BERSERK, and you’ll have everything from the spankiest, shimmery clean tones, through wonderful mid-gain drive tones and all the way into the thickest, saggiest fuzz tones, all available without tip toeing around on your pedal board. The look, feel and sounds produced by Fjord Fuzz pedals are extremely unique and tasteful, both sonically and aesthetically, and we can’t get enough of ’em.
