Spaceman Effects Artemis Modulated Filter

The amazing pedal creations coming from Spaceman Effects have been on our list of favorites for years now, and we’re stoked to bring another of their wonderful designs to you all today. The Artemis Modulated Filter takes funk and turns it upside down, with features not seen before on other envelope filters, and offering a wide range of tonal options with years of sonic exploration. Unprecedented capabilities ooze out of this pedal, but there’s a lot to discuss, so let’s get to it!

Filter pedals are part of one of the oldest and most prominent effect genres there is, and the Artemis takes everything you thought you knew about them up a notch, and beyond. There are controls for High Pass, Band Pass and Low Pass filters, but unlike most pedals of this nature, you don’t have to select just one. Each filter has its own blendable control knob, meaning you can pick and choose how much of each section is present in the signal! Each of these outputs gives you up to +10dB of boost, and if you cut the modulation off, they can be used as a sick 3-band EQ.

The above chart show you the different Modes you can choose from on the Artemis, each with its own unique sound and feel. Here, you can sweep the filter in both Up and Down directions, as well as utilizing the 4 four waveshapes found in the LFO modes. The Freq control sweeps the corner frequency of the filter directly or in conjunction with the internal modulation to set the range of the sweep. For maximum range, you’ll want to keep this knob turned low.

The Sens knob adjusts how responsive the filter sweep is to picking dynamics of different instruments. In LFO modes, it can dynamically modulate the speed of the LFO. In the Envelope modes, Amount controls the modulation depth. In LFO modes, it controls the speed. Res produces a formant peak ahead of the filter cutoff frequency. In higher settings, the additional amplitude of the resonant peak will drive the filter into satisfying breakup.

The Exp jack can be used with an external expression pedal (see our demo below) or in conjunction with 0-5CV, via a 1/4″ TRS cable. The 2-pole state-variable design produces enhanced modulation and mixing capabilities, while the envelope funk just OOOOZES out of every crevice. The mixing ability of the filters also presents an unparalleled level of custom tone shaping, perfect for anyone who needs exacting specifics for their rig. Another home run by the king of home runs, the Artemis Modulated Filter from Spaceman Effects knocks it right out of the park. We run through some of our favorite settings in the demo below, as well as explore all kinds of sounds you can extract from this beauty, so be sure to click (and subscribe)!!
