Some of you may know Area 51 from their impressive line of wah pedals, but they also do buffers, fuzz, mod kits and more. Today we’re going to look at The Alienist Voicing Boost, another impressive creation of theirs which gives you a ton of tonal options in a wicked rad enclosure. Hand-wired and designed to specifically drive your favorite tube amp, this futuristic-looking machine is the ultimate in treble-boosting, giving you vintage amplifier tone in the blink of an eye.
Just take a look at The Alienist Voicing Boost, and you realize you’re not in Kansas anymore. The see-through bubble lets you look directly into the guts of this copper-toned gem, and if you can tell what all that stuff does, hat’s off to you. There’s a Volume knob, of course, as well as a 6-way Voicing rotary switch. Here, each position moves the frequency range of the pedal up or down, and each voice is interactive with the Norm/Res switch. This activates a special resonant filter circuit, which drops the gain just a titch, and creates a tone similar of that to a fixed wah – but without the noise.
You also have the choice between two transistors: NOS Germanium or higher-gain Silicon, which add different flavors into the mix as well. As far as the components and build are concerned, Area 51 took no shortcuts, filling The Alienist with audiophile-grade resistors and capacitors for a low noise floor, Switchcraft jacks and a solid, sturdy enclosure to ensure years of joyful stomping. Area 51 The Alienist Voicing Boost is responsive, warm and character-shaping, in all the ways you’ve been searching for. Cheers to Dan and all at Area 51 Tube Audio Designs on a killer booster that will change how you look at boost pedals – be sure to check out their lineup of gear on their website, and listen to The Alienist in action in our demo video below!
