Unity throughout an effects pedal brand is a key component to its success. Today’s pedal is the second one we’ve encountered from our Italian friends at Dophix, and the theme between them is a resounding MICHELANGELO. The first, the Michelangelo Overdrive Plus, boasted the famous artists’ namesake, and today’s pedal bears a sliver of a piece of his actual artwork. The Dophix David Over Distortion is (you guessed it) and overdrive + distortion pedal, but with just three control knobs and zero toggles. How does it work? Magnificently, as a matter of fact…
Dophix describes the David along much the same lines as the sculpture it’s named after: expressive, proud, penetrating, strong and full of character. Well, we tend to agree with each and every one of those. Thought the controls are simple, the tones are vast and the musical opportunities are plentiful. ‘Gas’ and ‘Tone’ work together to create a bevy of boost/drive/distortion sounds, ranging from a clean-ish boost to all variations of the overdrive spectrum and finally ending up in wicked distortion territory. Playing with these parameters allows you to dial in the perfect tone for your particular rig, but the David is also an excellent plug-and-play machine, as there’s no 400-page manual to read before you plug it in.
The pedal itself is very unassuming, presented with a bare-bones approach, minimal graphics, petite text and even unusually small-sized knobs. These all tie in to form a cohesive, clean look that cleverly disguises the power trapped inside. Basic but never boring, as the majority of Dophix’s lineup of pedals are, this one will light a fire under you and take your creativity to new, glorious heights. Thanks so much to the Dophix team for sending us another wonderful effects pedal to peruse and investigate – we, of course, have done a demo for all your listening pleasures, so sit back and enjoy, and when you’re done watching, head over and show Dophix some support! Stay safe, everybody!
