We’ve all been trying to find THAT amp-in-a-box sound forever, it seems, right? A lot of good pedals have come out that have achieved this goal pretty well, but to really make it convincing, you’ve got to have real tubes, and that just isn’t always possible. Fortunately, we have a unit today for you that utilizes TWO real preamp tubes to bring you a faithful recreation of the 1987 Marshall Plexi amp. Ladies and gents, let’s check out the Plexi Heritage Tube Preamp from Xtonebox, shall we?
Right from the get-go, you can clearly see that the Plexi Heritage is in a class of its own. Bigger than a standard pedal, for sure, but still small enough to fit onto most pedalboards, you get the best of both worlds in one box. Using those two ECC83 preamp tubes, along with point-to-point wiring and the best available, selected electronic components, the faithfulness of the vintage Plexi amps comes roaring at you instantly.
There are two channels present here: Normal and Bright. The Normal channel gives you a fat, beefy clean tone, and will provide a nice, rounded crunch tone as the gain is increased. The Bright channel is just that, adding in some higher frequencies, and going from a sharp crunch up to a true British overdrive. The best part here is that you can use BOTH channel at once, by foot-switching to Dual mode, to take advantage of all aspects of both channels, and really get to dialing in your perfect overdrive sound.
The Plexi Heritage works with guitars, as you’ll hear in our demo video below, but also with bass and keyboards. You can use it as a portable preamp, in your amp’s FX loop Return or with your sound card interface with high impedance or line level input. The 12V power supply bumps everything up as well, and the stainless steel chassis ensures years of enjoyment, and protection for those fragile glass tubes it houses. If you can’t afford the real thing, the Plexi Heritage Tube Preamp is just about the best option you’ve got to sounding like your guitar heroes of decades past. Cheers to Xtonebox on this wonderful, rich and bold creation, capturing all these tones and sounds in such a convenient and classy-looking enclosure.
