ibanez es2 echo shifterI have always liked to see an Analog Delay pedal with the ability to do Tap Tempo – don’t you? Aside from having that functionality, the ES2 Echo Shifter from Ibanez can do lots of other cool stuff, including oscillation, modulation and a slew of warm delay and echo setting that will leave you speechless. All this in a nice, small enclosure for board real estate…this is gonna be fun.

The ES2 looks a bit futuristic, with the 3 control knobs situated all in a row up top, and that cool slider right in the middle for controlling the delay time is great placement by the designers (I like to use my foot for real-time slider adjustments). For such a small box, the options are pretty plentiful. You can Tap in the Delay Time, which is always a bonus, and with 3 control knobs (Feedback, Mix and Depth), you’re not falling over yourself trying to figure out how to use it in the middle of a gig. Two very cool options are the toggle switches. First, Modulation gives your delay that slight nuance of a tape echo feel, generating slight, random bits of ancient warble-y goodness. Finally, the Oscillation mode is not one for the faint-hearted, as it will take your signal and twist, mangle and electrify it beyond recognition (if you want it to, depends on your settings). Use these together and your foot to control the Delay Time, and you’re in for hours of fun, both on stage and in the studio.

Enclosed in a tiny, retro-esque box, the ES2 provides ample delay times (up to 1 full second) and a couple of nice options to beef up your sound a bit. Are there delays with more options out there? Sure, but you won’t find something this versatile and small at this price anywhere else. Bravo, Ibanez, another fantastic and innovative pedal for us to use for years to come!
