It’s a real treat to stumble across and discover new pedal companies that might not be in the major spotlight, as we love to review and demo effects from a wide spectrum. The little guys are making some incredible effects pedals, and we’ve got another builder today to showcase that flies under the radar, but has some great gear to offer. The Sunn Model T Overdrive from Kenny B Pedals in Winnipeg, Canada, is based on the legendary amp of the same name, at a fraction of the cost but still unleashing fury when it needs to.
Sporting the same layout as the vintage doom machine, the Model T features a three-band EQ section, with controls for Treble, Mids and Bass. A Master volume control sets the overall output, and there are two separate channels to choose from, Normal and Brite. Each channel has its own gain control, using JFETs instead of tubes, and there’s a toggle switch as well, which allows you to select each channel individually, or both at the same time. This opens up the overdriven possibilities immensely, with different tones coming from each setting and the placement of the parameter knobs, for dialing in the exact classic or modern sound you’ve been searching for.
This seemingly tame pedal is anything but, at least once you crank the gains past about 2 o’clock and she roars into action. An excellent clean boost/tone enhancer in its own right, but the fuzzy elements that come alive around 3:00 are what really make this thing sparkle, as the original amps are also known to do. If you’ve got $2-3k and want to see how a true Sunn Model T sounds, you do it! For the rest of us, we’re thankful we can get close to that sound for around 100 bucks, thanks to builders like Kenny B. His Klone has been featured on our “Klone Wars” series on YouTube, so check that out, and be sure to check out his Reverb shop for more pedals as well!
