The last time an effects pedal from Beautiful Noise Effects came through our office, it was the large and exciting “When the Sun Explodes“, a marvelous Reverb and Distortion mixed together to form a powerful and inspiring pedal. When we heard they were sending us their newest creation, our interest and excitement went through the roof, and we couldn’t wait to get our hands on it. The Endless Sleeper arrived, and immediately we knew this was no ordinary delay pedal. Featuring two cascading digital delay voices and a lo-fi overall tone and sound, this is an effect that got our blood pumping and our creativity popping.
The Endless Sleeper’s name basically says it all: each delay circuit/chip has a max time of up to 1200ms, and once you crank up the Feedback knobs, this thing goes on forever, creating gorgeous, booming oscillation. The Overload footswitch gives you hands-free sonic bedlam, too, for either short spurts of chaos, or longer, pulsing, feedback-infused phrases of incredible noise and triumph. Each delay side features Delay I or Delay II parameters, which are Wet/Dry mix controls, as well as Delay Time and Feedback controls.
Off to the right, a little modulation section comes into play, and really ramps up the impressiveness of this delay. The Crush knob drives the output into an analog sample rate reducer, crunching your instrument’s signal down to emulate the sounds of 8-bit video games and ’80’s microcomputers – very cool, and extremely nostalgic (if you’re old like us). Secondly, you get a Glide control and toggle switch, which expressively modulates both delay sides through an internal LFO. You can conjure up chorus and vibrato-type tones at shorter delay settings, or crazy pitch-shifting madness as the time is increased.
Loud but even-tempered; chaotic but controlled; unnerving but smooth; maddening but inspiring. The Endless Sleeper feeds all of our desires to have a delay pedal that takes it up a notch, adding in sporadic bursts of over-the-top enjoyment and freewheeling enthusiasm, all packed into a not-too-big pedal enclosure that should fit on just about any pedalboard. From precise, subtle echo textures to total synthetic dream simulation, this one’s got it all. A big round of applause to the crew down under in Newcastle, Australia, for another gorgeous and awe-inspiring effect – if these guys aren’t on your radar yet, they will be now.
