JHS has been making great drive pedals for a while now, and the Double Barrel keeps the tradition going strong. Their version of a low-to-medium gain overdrive, the Double Barrel features 2 independent sides, which can be used separately or together, making for some interesting and extremely useful combinations.
The Right side of the pedal is the JHS 808, which is their standalone version of the classic Tubescreamer. Featuring that brilliant Screamer sound, this version also introduces a 3-way Gain toggle, so you can choose between a saturated drive sound, a boost and a crunchy overdrive. The Left side is the JHS Morning Glory, one of their all-time best selling pedals. This is more of a transparent drive, allowing you to shape your tone and add subtle sonic qualities to your sound. This side features a Bright Cut toggle switch, and can make your sound lighter or darker depending on where you set it.
I enjoyed dialing in each side right to where I thought they sounded good on their own, but what really got my tone going was the combination of the two. Used in conjunction, both sides’ best attributes are prominently displayed, and come together to form a tone-shaping sound that is not easily rivaled in the effects world. Add to that yet another toggle switch that allows you to decide which side goes first or second in your signal chain’s order, and you’ve got a unique and excellent-sounding pedal at your fingertips.
JHS Pedals continues to impress with their high-quality pedals and innovative takes on the current overdrive market. The Double Barrel is not going to blow the house down with distortion, but that’s not why you bought it in the first place….is it? Going from boost to a smooth, somewhat gristly medium overdrive with ease, this pedal will help shape your tone like few others.
