Continuing with a streak of impressive effects pedal creations, the crew at M.D. Effects brings us another tasty morsel to devour. Today’s featured pedal is The Timber, a versatile low-mid gain overdrive boost that is derived from a completely original circuit, and features a couple surprises thrown into the mix. A completely new approach to the traditional “gain stage,” this green monster offers up a wide range of dirt to use in any performance situation.
Volume and Drive are the only two control knobs present here, but have each been given that aforementioned big range, making them not just one-trick ponies. In addition to a large sonic spectrum, each side has been assigned its own toggle switch as well. On the Volume side, the Boost switch toggles between two differing volume levels, as well as two separate tone styles. Next to it, the Gain toggle switches between two diode clipping modes – in the Up position, the sound is a bit brighter and harsher, while the Down position brings with it a fatter, more rounded type of tone.
With these two switches and the ranges of the control knobs, The Timber turns out to be a deceptively complex pedal, despite a small parameter section. Part boost, part smooth overdrive and all tone enhancer, this pedal can jump around in any rig and any musical genre. Thanks again to the folks at M.D. Effects for another killer lineup addition, and be sure to check out their website, as well as our reviews of their other pedals. If you’re in the market for an awesome-sounding and valuable first stage overdrive pedal, look no further than The Timber from M.D. Effects.
