In today’s world that has become just fantastically filled with the most options-laden, powerful, hip, trendy and mind-blowing effects pedals on the planet, sometimes it’s hard to remember a day when everything moved a little slower, things were a bit easier and every pedal didn’t cost a ton of money or have a manual the size of a phone book…..for those of us who remember phone books. A prime example of these classic sort of effects is the one we’re going to look at today: the DC-1 Coot Cat Chorus from Danelectro. This pedal is weird-looking, with a body that’s too big for its tiny control section and, for some reason, fetches incredibly affordable prices wherever you can find one. For all these things and so much more, we just f*cking love it.
As you will be able to clearly note within a second’s glance at this off-pea green beauty, the Cool Cat Chorus has a two very simple controls. Speed is pretty easy to decipher, as it sets the rate, or number of sweeps, of the chorus effect. Chill, as you MAY guess, adjusts the Depth, or Intensity, or “Coolness” of the effect, as it mixes with your original tone. THAT’S IT. Like many gorgeous chorus pedals before and after it, sometimes simple is better….
….However….there’s one MAJOR feature that sets this one apart from the rest of the pack: STEREO OUTPUTS. Beaming with intensity, vintage attitude and, honestly, powerful, lush, sweeping chorus tones, the DC-1 is a marvel wrapped in an oddly-shaped enclosure that produces some of the finest chorus sounds you’re going to find. Anywhere. No, for real, this isn’t a joke. The best part? If you do your research, can be patient and are great at making a deal, it can be had for less than 50 bucks, maybe even less than 35, if you really want to dig deep. Now, while this won’t quite get you to CE-2 or similar territory, it’ll get you close, but in an almost better way….you know, with the Stereo and all….
The DC-1 Cool Cat Chorus from Danelectro was produced in the late 90’s, but sounds like it could have come from the late 60’s OR just last week. Lush. Rotary. Acoustic. Doubling. Subtle. All available right here, right now. Rich, syrupy and silky smooth as they come, there’s no way you’ll be disappointed by this pedal. Unless you’re a pedal snob that won’t spend less than $300 on any given pedal – in that case, please don’t pick one of these up, and let the rest of us bask in their ever-loving splendor. Cheers!
