Today’s pedal is kind of a special one – last fall, I donated money to a raffle that Waterslide Guitars was having to benefit the World Central Kitchen, who have helped feed people in and around Asheville, NC, where I happen to live, in the wake of Hurricane Helene. To my surprise, my name was chose as the winner of the Greer Amps Black Mountain Crunch Drive, and I couldn’t have been happier. It’s been a while since a Greer pedal came through the shop, and I was stoked to check this one out, as always…

Looming large, like the towering behemoths of full stacks of yore, the Black Mountain Crunch Drive roars to life, bringing new dimensions of vintage tone to guitarists (and bass players, too!). This new crunch based drive is rooted in a tone quest for the sound of one particular recording of a crunchy British amp, but it has flexibility beyond just that sound. From simply adding crunch, to getting that famous midrange snarl and growl of those metal panel amps that came out just after the plexi era, the Black Mountain Crunch Drive gives up the goods in a way that has a natural, amp-like crunch to it.
This circuit was inspired by many conversations with many friends, and developed with The Darkness’ album Permission to Land blasting in the background…it’ll get ya there, if you want it to. The two clipping diodes responsible for the drive in this circuit are purposefully imbalanced, selected to impart the proper texture and crunch for this circuit. This pedal gives you giant, stack-based crunch overdrive, as well as midrange snarl and texture like giant old stacks of yore!
The raffle that the Black Mountain Crunch Drive came from was a big success, raising almost $11,000 for the World Central Kitchen. I can’t say enough about all the donations, hard work and effort that people from this area and people from all over contributed during such a tough time. It’s gonna be a while before Asheville and the surrounding areas are back to full strength, if ever, but WNC is strong, and we’ll keep rebuilding, especially with folks like Waterslide Guitars and Greer Amps helping along the way. Be sure to visit both of their websites and grab some gear, and don’t forget to check out our demo video below – cheers!
