Ever since I heard the opening notes of “Cowboys From Hell” as an early ’90s teenager, I’ve been a fan of Pantera, especially the musicianship created by Dimebag, Rex and Vinnie. Today’s pedal is a collaboration with one of these fellas, showcasing and updating an effect he’s been using for decades. The Morley Rex Brown Old Blue Wah simplifies everything you know about this type of pedal, while modernizing the circuit and leaving you to focus on what’s most important: The Music.

Old Blue is a modified recreation of Rex Brown’s Pro Series II Wah. It starts off using the same through-hole components and circuit layout as the original but has a modified sweep per Rex’s preference to sound like the original 1970’s Morley Wahs. The circuit is derived from Morley’s 1992 redesign, which introduced Switchless Activation and converted their classic Wah circuits to use modern optics. A key feature on this old school design is that it prevents any frequencies from being shaved off, which gives it an intense, monstrous sweep that’s found on Morley’s original 1970’s Wah pedals. It is also virtually immune to outside noise and EMI. This is the first release of Morley’s new Classic Series, with more coming here in 2025.
Old Blue is more than just a pedal… It’s been Rex Brown’s trusty sidekick for over three decades. Rex first started collecting Morley pedals in his youth in the 1970’s and acquired his Pro Series II Wah “Old Blue” in the 1990’s. Since then, it hasn’t left his pedalboard. Old Blue has been used on countless gigs and on multiple Pantera albums, including The Great Southern Trendkill and Reinventing the Steel. This new version brandishes plenty of modern Morley design staples, such as electro-optical operation and switchless activation, ensuring whisper-quiet performance and trouble-free deployment. You also get a 15dB Wah Level control and a premium buffer circuit, along with a rugged cold-rolled steel housing, an LED indicator, and a glow-in-the-dark rubber treadle.
Whether weaving walking bass lines under Dimebag Darrell’s frenetic solos or holding down the low end for Down, Kill Devil Hill, Crowbar, or Elegant Weapons, there’s no mistaking Rex Brown — he’s a true American original. The Rex Brown Old Blue Wah enables today’s musicians to harness the sound of a great bass player, as well as one of Morley’s most coveted classics. Be sure to head to Sweetwater to grab one of these bad boys for yourself, and be sure to check out our demo video below, with our pal Bert Handy laying down some funk and creating some dirty low end tones – cheers!!
