Each new creation I see from our friends at Whimsy Machines (The Great Fantabulizing Whatsitdo, The Short Stack) brings a big smile to my face, and I just knew today’s piece of gear would do the same. Come along as we investigate the Sweet Tooth Waveshaping Fuzz Overdrive, an effects unit that defies logic and opens the doorways to brand new sonic possibilities. Innovative and creative as always, this one sounds just about as wild as it looks…
Say “hello” to dopecrumb05, aka Sweet Tooth. The Whimsy Machines Sweet Tooth is a dual mode LED induced distortion box offering warm overdrive or waveshaping fuzz at the flip of a switch, followed by a Pultec EQP-1A inspired tone shaping stage. These small-batch audio creations are all designed 100% in-house, in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
But just what is LED induced distortion? The left lamp on the front of the pedal not only informs the player of effect bypass status, but it is the distortion itself. The harder it’s driven, the brighter the glow and the harder the distortion. Following this is a user-customizable Pultec EQP-1A inspired tone shaping circuit with independent boost/cut of low and high frequencies (Pultec trick!!). Unlike the original EQP-1A however, PCB mounted screw terminals allow for easy and reversible swapping of low and high-pass capacitors in the boost and cut circuits.
Having Fuzz and Overdrive together in one pedal is always fun, but they rarely combine to create the kinds of sounds that the Sweet Tooth is capable of. From awesome boost to crunchy drive to spitty, wild fuzz, this pedal will open your eyes and ears in new, exciting and fantastic ways. Head to the Whimsy Machines website for all the info and to order one of your own, and don’t forget to check out our demo video below (and subscribe while you’re there if you haven’t already) – cheers!!
