There are Boost pedals, and then there are BOOST PEDALS. Some give you more volume, some help shape your tone, some push your amp into breakup territory, and some, like today’s TWO pedals, are modern takes on a classic, world-renowned circuit. The Type 14 and Type 32 Custom Shop PNP Boost pedals from MMK Electrics are just that, taking a vintage circuit and turning it upside down and inside out…
These Boost pedals are inspired by the Rangemaster Treble Booster – Type 14 is built with NOS Element #14 Silicon Transistors, while the Type 32 is built with Element #32 Germanium Transistors. For these pedals, MMK Electrics uses a wide variety of GE, RCA, Teledyne, JAN, Toshiba, Raytheon, Philco, TI, STI, and Amperex BJTs, with each one hand selected and tested one by one. Both are biased from two points in the circuit for reliability and best possible function.
Each one is also available in two different configurations: Standard or Low-Gain. The Standard Gain option uses low leakage transistors that have a beta of 70-100hFE, while the Low Gain option uses metal can low leakage transistors that have a beta of 30-60hFE. The lower gain option is really great for a first gain stage in your signal chain, but don’t be misled – there is plenty of boost to breakup the front end if need be.
After the Red Cream Soda Overdrive Distortion and Norris Fuzz pedals from MMK Electrics, I was curious to see where they’d go next, and these two boost pedals are just the perfect answer. If you’re looking for THAT Rangemaster tone without the Rangemaster price tag, then the Type 14 and Type 32 PNP Boosts are right up your alley. Head over to the MMK Electrics website to snag one (or both) for yourself, and be sure to check out our demo videos for both pedals below and on YouTube. Cheers!!
