Pedal of the Day celebrates its 10 Year Anniversary, with the Boss DM-3 Analog Delay

Well, we did it – today marks the official TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY of Pedal of the Day!! It’s been quite a ride, and we’ve seen an unbelievable amount of effects over the years…but today, I thought we’d head back to the very beginning, and revisit the one that started it all, one of our favorite pedals ever: the Boss DM-3 Analog Delay. The last analog delay pedal produced by Boss in the ’80s, it has a unique sound, simple controls and an easily recognizable enclosure. Let’s jump back in and see how amazing a 40 year old pedal can be…

Made in the 1980s, the DM-3 was the last analog delay produced by Boss, building on the now-vintage sounds of its older sibling, the DM-2. Adding an additional filter and high-speed noise reduction to the earlier circuit, the DM-3 also features a Direct Out jack, which lets you run 2 amps, for a pseudo-stereo effect. That is hands-down one of the best features of this pedal, and why I keep coming back to it after all these years.

There really is a beautiful musical quality to the subtle degradation of the repeats, as is the case with many pedals in this realm, but there’s just *something* about the DM-3 that feels different. While not as popular as the DM-2, this one holds up in its own right, and, I think, gives that other famous pinkish effect a run for its money. Repeat Rate, Echo and Intensity parameters let you control the delay time, mix and feedback of the delay effect, and even though the delay range only goes up to around 300ms, there’s a TON of gorgeous tones to be found here.

It’s been a lot of fun revisiting the DM-3 for our 10th Anniversary, and honestly pretty hard to believe it’s been that long. Boss has been a big supporter of ours over the years, and I’ve enjoyed digging back into this pedal I love so much, but don’t get to play all that often.
