We’re venturing back into the unpredictable world of Chase Bliss again today, as we check out their latest release. A collaboration with Goodhertz, an audio software company making plugins and algorithms, Lossy is a lo-fi bit crusher at its heart, but with a TON of other options, nooks and crannies waiting to be explored. Come along as we lose our collective minds trying to decipher what’s going on with this amazing new machine…
Lossy captures the special kind of degradation that happens to digital audio when it’s shrunk, transferred, and compromised. Streaming music on a 56k modem, an MP3 ripped from a CD-R, a viral video from 2007 played through a cellphone. All the nasty and beautiful mistakes of heavily deconstructed digital audio in an easy-to-tweak real-time pedal.
Deconstruct your sound in real-time. Engage a unique freeze that can evolve over time. Introduce sparkling artifacts, errors, and spectral resonance. Spread out with a routable reverb to soften or feed the loss. Explore three different kinds of loss, each with a distinct response and sound: Submerged sparkles, feathery plunks, shifting digital clouds, and much, much more.
Introduce unpredictability and motion with the Packets toggle. Simulate a bad connection with the Packet Loss option, or use Packet Repeat for glitches and transfer errors. Lossy includes both a routable reverb and a very flexible filter block to emphasize, soften, and spread its effect. Lossy also contains a spectral freeze that can follow your playing and evolve at a speed of your choosing. Use it as a shifting background, or resonant accompaniment, or to transform yourself into a slushy synth. Or solidify it for a more traditional, steady pad.
As usual in the Chase Bliss world, there’s a lot going on with Lossy, and while it might be a bit TOO experimental for some, those of us who thrive on creativity and thinking outside the box LOVE it. It also features advanced connectivity and customization options including MIDI, CV and Expression control, presets, and internal modulation of any or all its knobs via the Dipswithes on the back panel. Take a ride with us as we dive deep into this pink beauty in our demo video below, and be sure to visit the Chase Bliss website for ordering and more info – enjoy!!
