Well, Chase Bliss has done it once again. In case you’ve been hiding under a rock, they recently released the first unit of their Small Batch series, the Reverse Mode C Multidirectional Delay. This is a collaboration with Empress Effects, as the specific sound that Joel Korte and his crew were after is from the Octave Tap mode of the Empress Superdelay, which was released back in 2008. This is, as usual, one for the experimenters, audiophiles and Stereo Effects lovers, but don’t take our word for it…
Joel says:
“Reverse Mode C was kind of like a fun puzzle. It had to do 3 things:
1.) Turn a 15 year old effect into something fresh and new.
2.) Do it while still remaining true to the original.
3.) Not be gimmicky or one-trick.
The process ending up being really collaborative and natural, one feature leading to the next. It’s not the pedal that I thought it would be when we started — its signature sound is actually the way it moves. It creates this layered, mesmerizing motion unlike anything we’ve done before. It was so nice to just go with it and trust what was happening. As long as it had that “Reverse Mode C” spirit and Steve liked it, we were good.”
Modulation: Explore six varieties of modulation that can be pushed into audio rate. The motion can be synced to the delay time or free-running. Frequency shifting (x2), vibrato, chorus, tremolo (x2).
Multidirectional Echoes: Reverse Mode C has three different echo voices that can be isolated or blended together in a variety of ways to create rich, layered repeats and unique panning effects.
Sequencing: Cycle between the different voices to create rolling echoes and a shifting stereo image. Have the sequencer run continuously for an additional layer of synced motion, or control it with your playing dynamics.
Reverse Mode C features advanced connectivity and customization options including MIDI, CV and Expression control, presets, and internal modulation of any or all its knobs. As with all Chase Bliss creations, you really have to sit down with it in person to get the full effect (pun intended)…however, we did make a pretty rad demo video below, where we run through the controls, a couple of different instruments, explore some looping and really dig into this wonderful effects unit. Hats off and thanks to Chase Bliss once again – these guys never disappoint, and once you hear the Reverse Mode C, you’ll understand what we mean…cheers!
