Over the years, the folks at Aclam Guitars have put out some extremely specific and well-done effects pedals that have certain iconic sounds in mind. The Dr. Robert replicated the soul of the VOX UL730 am, used by the Beatles on Revolver & Sgt. Pepper; the Windmiller captured the sound of the preamp from the rare Grampian Reverberation Unit Type 636; the Cinnamon Drive gave us vintage British tube amp sounds of the 60’s and 70’s. Today, we’re taking a look at another classic sound: Eric Clapton’s Woman Tone.
The Woman Tone Overdrive captures Clapton’s unique sound during Cream’s ephemeral yet significant existence, featuring a Plexi style overdrive and a distinguished Woman Tone function, replicating the exact same signature trick he was famous for. The combination of his specific custom Gibson SG with humbuckers, potentiometers and tone capacitors, in conjunction with the Marshall Plexi amp, makes it incomparable to other tones of the time, and that what is captured here. This effect reproduces his unique rhythmic and solo tones, fine-tuned using both live and studio recordings of Cream.
Inspired by Clapton’s 100W full stacks it results in a powerful overdrive with a great British character! Designed having blues-rock in mind, it will perfectly suit any guitar player seeking a vintage tone! A pickup simulation circuit emulating the tonal characteristics of a P.A.F style pickup has been incorporated to reproduce the “Woman Tone”. With its buffered input, the guitar signal won’t be affected. Use compressors, fuzzes or whatever effect you want in front of the Woman Tone, and it will retain its tonal characteristics.
The artwork for this pedal was even done by Marijke Koger, the woman who originally painted Clapton’s famous psychedelic SG nicknamed “The Fool“. The Woman Tone Overdrive creates a special piece of history, both in looks and in amazing tonal reproduction. This is a very specific sound, indeed, but if it’s one you’ve been chasing for years, you’ll be astonished at how great it is. Cheers to all the hard work and research done by the Aclam Guitars crew – head to their website for a much more in-depth look at this pedal, and be sure to check out out demo video below as well!
