Discomfort Designs Riemann's Grave Modulated Allfilter

Happy Halloween, everybody! In keeping with the spookiness, oddities and non-normal activities of this All Hallows’ Eve, we’ve got an effects unit that defies all logic and convention, giving “out-of-the-box” an entirely new meaning. The aptly named Riemann’s Grave Modulated Allfiter from Discomfort Designs is a curate trio of biquad filters paired with a sample rate reducer. If that doesn’t confuse and excite you, maybe this isn’t the effect for you. If it does, however, you’re gonna want to stick around…

With Riemann’s Grave, you can filter your frequencies and crush your bits in some very unique, interesting, and uncomfortable ways. It’s also named for a dead mathematician, Bernhard Riemann, a German mathematician who made contributions to analysis, number theory, and differential geometry. These subjects all seemingly come into play with this pedal, as your input signal is twisted, wrenched, pulled and shifted in roughly a million different ways, with each twist and turn of a knob or flick of a switch resulting in an abstract display of auditory prowess.

Two Low Pass Filters are at the heart of Riemann’s Grave, and you can apply modulation randomly or with some precision. You can also control the sample rate reduction/bit crushing, creating some wonderfully ugly, atonal messy sounds. Not just for guitar, this effect works on drums, synths and any other input signal you can think of, transforming it into a fury of bits, bleeps, pops and more.

Since there are so many knobs and switches and things to explain, we’re going to just direct you to our demo video below, which runs through everything, and tries to make as much sense out of the Riemann’s Grave Modulated Allfiter as is humanly possible (not sure if we succeeded, but we gave it a shot!). Halloween is about transformation, experimentation and, above all, having a great time, and this pedal encapsulates each and every one of those things with flying colors. We’ve always loved the wacky effects that Discomfort Designs puts out, and this one is no exception, taking everything yet again to the next level. Check out their website and Reverb shop, and be sure to peruse our demo…be safe out there, and, once again, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
