Effects that come with a backstory, or some kind of accompanying literature, are always a hit here at Pedal of the Day (and elsewhere, we assume). Today’s pedal has a bit of mystical mystery to it, as well as sounding absolutely incredible. The Tulpa FX Tsathoggua Overdrive is rooted in dangerous adventure, but brings all the tone and power to back it up…
In certain circles, Tsathoggua (also known as The Sleeper of N’Kai) sleeps and awaits any unfortunate soul who dares to wake him. This overdrive is sort of the same: it’s a low-medium gain overdrive with a Tweed-like character, creeping up on your eardrums steadily as you increase the Gain. The heart of the circuit comes from a genuine Texas Instruments 4558 op-amp – the same kind used in the original Tube Screamers. A mix of diodes provides unique gain as well – two MA150s and one 1S1588. The Presence control boosts the upper mids and treble frequencies, making it sound livelier and adding an interesting sparkle to the sound.
Modeled after the Clark Gainster, the Tsathoggua Overdrive Eldritch Edition uses high-quality jacks, power filtering and a feather-click footswitch keep this pedal as quiet as possible, for years to come. The vintage vibe and warm characteristics come from carbon composition and carbon film resistors, and it uses low noise NOS film caps and electrolytic caps as well. This all adds up to an impressive, amp-driving powerhouse of a pedal that will fit in with any board you can think of. Cheers to Tulpa FX on a hell of pedal – this is our first foray into their lineup, and we can’t wait to see more.
