Mozztronics JD-2 Thunder Drive

Andrew and the crew at Mozztronics just keep putting out incredible pedal after incredible pedal, and we’re so glad we get to keep on reviewing and demoing these wonderful creations. For the last pedal in the latest batch they sent us, we’re taking a look at the JD-2 Thunder Drive, an amp/drive/preamp/distortion all wrapped into one undefinable and glorious effect. Strap in and hold on, this one’s a crusher (as usual)…

The JD-2 Thunder Drive is the answer to wanting something a bit different from the diode clipping overdrives out there. Using multiple JFET transistors, which act in a similar way to a vacuum tube, this pedal is able to accurately simulate an entire low wattage amplifier. There are no diodes in the audio signal path, and no diode clipping in this unit, just nice JFET compressive dirt and overdrive. A 3-band EQ is also on-board, to help dial in your perfect tone. The mids have sweepable frequency to its easy to nail those great mids, or enhance feedback squeaks and squeals. But that’s not all – also included is a cabsim circuit, able to be switched in & out with the CAB switch.

GAIN controls the amount of gain from the first stage, while VOL adjusts the overall volume out of the pedal. The EQ section consists of BASS (a low-end shelving eq control), MID (a midrange eq control), FREQ adjusts the midrange frequency and TREble is a high-end shelving eq control. The CAB switch turns the inbuilt cabsim on or off (switch down is cabsim active).

You can use the JD-2 Thunder Drive as a treble boost, for a clean-ish, jangly sound when playing softly, or dig in a bit harder to activate the compressive JFET dirt. This pedal adds sparkle to your tone, as an always-on effect, and can simulate the sought-after Echoplex preamp sounds with ease as well.
