It seems that whenever the word “Engine” is mixed in with the title or description of an effect, it’s guaranteed to be contain elements not thought of before. Today’s pedal, the Thermion Stone Age Fuzz Tone Engine, lives up to that stereotype, providing an options-laden fuzz topped with 2 other signal blends and a slew of controls to fit any rig. Powerful, bold and experimental, we love pedals like this, so let’s dive in and check it out!
First of all, the Stone Age features four fuzz engines: Single Transistor, Maestro, Face and a modern Muff ‘Thermion’ modified with improved dynamics and definition. Each one provides a different sonic flavor using the Volume and Gain controls as a base. There’s a bypass-able EQ section here as well, letting you control the High and Low Cut frequencies of the fuzz effect to taste.
The real fun for us is in the two Blend footswitches. Use the Clean option to inject as much of your clean signal into the mix as you’d like; use the Octave option to conjure up classic octave fuzz tones, some that get wildly experimental and psychedelic, if you dig that sort of thing (we sure do). The Stone Age is transistor based, with relay switching and true bypass for guitarists who love pure fuzz tones and flexibility.
Like the Zero Dynamic Hybrid Amp and Black Sun Rototsphere before it, the Stone Age Fuzz Tone Engine showcases how Thermion’s unique and exciting approach to music gear really puts them on the map. Every time a new package from them arrives, we know there’s something game-changing inside, and are excited to bring you more of their creations in the future.
