Some pedals you just have to try to really see what they can do, most of the time due to a complex structure or a boatload of functions, options and parameters. The BigSky Multidimensional Reverberator from Strymon is most definitely one of these pedals. Boasting 12 different studio-class reverb machines, along with 8 separate parameter control knobs and 300 built-in presets, this is one machine that you MUST sit down with for many hours to fully understand the vastness of its range and power.
The meat in this mammoth pedal are the 12 distinct reverb modes, and they are as follows: Hall (slower effect build), Plate (faster effect build), Spring (surf rock tones), Swell (gradual verb appearance), Bloom (big, billowing and ambient), Cloud (big, gorgeous reverb), Chorale (vocal accompaniment), Shimmer (pitch-shifted reverb), Magneto (multi-head echo), Nonlinear (uniques shapes and sonic textures), Reflections (small space reverb) and Room (large range of spacing and room size). Whew! Each of these has a unique and individualistic sound, as well as the ability for each one to control an extra set of parameters, depending on which mode happens to be selected. There are so many variables to each mode, the reverberated possibilities are truly endless. The sounds escaping from the BigSky constitute a mix of thick, luscious, powerful, spacious, exciting, ambient and wicked awesome, just to mention a few.
The main control knob portion is equally as daunting to decipher, and progress like this: Value (access the Globals and Common Parameters menus), Decay (controls the signals decay time), Pre-Delay (time between the dry signal and onset of the effect), Mix (balance between Wet and Dry signals), Tone (from dark and warm reverb to bright and crisp), Param1 and Param2 (change varying sets of parameters within each mode) and Mod (adds slight or thick modulation to the reverberated signal). Using all of these in conjunction with the twelve aforementioned modes opens up the sonic soundscape and lets you dial in EXACTLY the tones and sound you have been searching for.
The BigSky utilizes high-quality components, as do all things Strymon, including a powerful SHARC processor and an analog circuit design. The look and feel of it are something out of the future as well, made up of a lightweight but extremely sturdy aluminum enclosure, with nice, quiet soft-touch switches and heavy-duty control knobs that won’t let you down, in any musical setting. You can use an expression pedal to control any knob, or an external Tap switch to control the Pre-Delay parameter on the fly; use the Press-and-Hold feature to go into either Infinite Sustain or Freeze modes, or use the MIDI In/Outs to add even more control to this pedal. Add to all this the Stereo Ins and Outs, and you’ve got a true studio-quality reverb that fits onto most pedalboards with ease.
Basically, this is one giant box of reverberated glory. If there is a reverb sound you are trying to nail down, the BigSky Multidimensional Reverberator can do it for you, plus come up with sounds you have never heard, and maybe never even thought possible. Each player is going to use this pedal differently, and there’s really no wrong way to configure it, or a bad sound in the house. Once again setting the standard for high-end, studio-quality stompbox effects, Strymon does it again with the BigSky.
