As their name suggests, the makers of fine pedals at Fjord Fuzz are relatively obsessed with, well, FUZZ. Having had the privilege of reviewing their gear over the last 2 years, it’s safe to say we’re fairly obsessed with it as well. Today’s fuzzy gem comes to us as the EMBLA Overdrive Fuzz, a mix of circuits that present a wide range of dirt to experiment with, and we’ll probably be obsessed with this one, too…
Wanting a fuzz that behaved like an overdrive, Fjord Fuzz has re-worked the EMBLA circuit dozens of times, finally ending up with this current version. The Gain and Volume knobs take you from crisp, beautiful clean boost to thick, heavy fuzz and any nuance in between. It cleans up brilliantly and just always works, with any instrument, any amp and in any setting. The bias knob lets you starve the signal without ever turning the pedal off. This can come in handy for bassists who don’t want to just add to the noise floor of the band while idle or it can help you make your guitar sound like a ’60s Tonebender type fuzz tone. The thickness control gives you the ability to pair it up with any amp. Turn it down for low wattage setups and back up for huge stage amps.
Since the knobs aren’t labeled on Fjord Fuzz effects, you’d better head over to our YouTube channel for an in-depth look at the EMBLA (you want to anyway, right?) We dig this one as much as any of their pedals we’ve played thus far, and can’t wait to see what the future brings from this rad company out of Norway. Be sure to check out their website for more info on the EMBLA Overdrive Fuzz, as well as their full lineup of effects!
