We just loved the Unicorn Blood II Octave Fuzz we recently reviewed from KHDK Electronics, and couldn’t wait to get our hands on some more of their gear. Today’s pedal pairs down the controls and shrinks the enclosure a bit, but brings the same intensity and distortive prowess KHDK is known for right to the forefront. The Scuzz Box Fuzz is powerfully crunchy, ripping and screaming, but clear and present, for a ton of killer fuzz tones on tap.
The Scuzz Box features two distinct modes: Fuzz ands Scuzz. The Fuzz mode is a go-to mode, highly listenable and a top-notch fuzz all-around. When you switch to the Scuzz mode, your tone gets wicked gnarly, dangerous and unpredictable. This gated, velcro-type fuzz has an 8-bit tone to it, and absolutely pummels your amp and your eardrums alike.
As far as the controls are concerned, Fuzz makes your signal overdriven, dirty and massive, with increased distortion and sustain. Lower settings here have great dynamics and pick sensitivity as well. The Deep knob controls the amount of lows going into the Scuzz Box and dramatically influences the overall dynamics, defining the character of the tone before the gain stage. It determines whether the tone is fat and massive, or overdrive-like with a faster attack. Volume sets the output volume of the pedal (warning: this pedal gets LOUD!), while Tone is a natural hi-cut control with a very wide range. Turn it clockwise for more high end, turn it counterclockwise to cut highs.
There’s also a Buffer switch present, too, which eliminates the unwanted oscillation that may occur with effects placed in front of the Scuzz Box. This switch helps retain clarity and eliminates passive signal loss in longer cables, ensuring great tone in any setup. The KHDK Electronics Scuzz Box Fuzz sounds incredible in a rhythm setting, as well as producing soaring lead tones for amazing solos, and even getting into weird and wild experimental territory.
