Vertex Tone Secret Overdrive

There are a LOT of overdrive pedals in our world today, and we’ve seen a pretty decent number of them here at Pedal of the Day. A certain green screamer effect circuit seems to get copied and cloned, or slightly altered to fit the maker’s sonic needs, as does today’s specific pedal. The Vertex Tone Secret Overdrive recreates the sound of these “classic” pedals hitting a Blackface 12AX7 preamp, but with more controls and less gain. Mmmmmmmm…..interesting…..

The Tone Secret aims to harness the DNA of iconic “screamer” users, but without the need for a cranked, mid-scooped amp to run the effect into. Although it only utilizes 50% of the tube screamer gain in the traditional sense, it features controls for Pre-(Pre-Vol) and Post-(Master) Overdrive, allowing you to tweak its characteristics to match any amplifier. There are also individual controls for the Treble and Mid-Range frequencies, for more tonal flavoring. Add in the Grit knob to dial in your perfect dirt amount, and you can control your amp’s natural breakup in tandem with the overdrive effects from the Tone Secret.

Needless to say, this is one of the best TS-style overdrives we’ve ever come across. The Vertex Tone Secret Overdrive produces warm, inviting drive tones that gently caress and massage your tone, bringing it to the point of beautiful breakup without being overbearing or harsh. That’s a tricky thing to accomplish, and Vertex has done it to perfection.
