Whimsy Machines Short Stack JFET Booster Preamp

Right out of the box (and, actually, including the box itself), today’s pedal and company are bringing something unique to the table. The Whimsy Machines Short Stack JFET Booster Preamp looks modern and vintage simultaneously, and once you turn it on, it feels that way somehow as well. A single stage, ultra high gain JFET machine, this throwback features nostalgic graphics, killer tones and a wide range of options to blend into any rig.

Offering clean amplification to overdrive, and warm distortion to murder-your-face amplification (their words), the Short Stack beefs up your other pedals and drives your favorite tube amp to the sweet spot with ease. Volume sets the output amount, while Level sets the amp input level, creating a wide spectrum of tone-shaping sounds to play with. Gain adjusts the amplifier gain, and you can set the amp’s bias using the Bias knob.

dopecrumb [ dohp – kruhm ]
noun

– Handmade one-of-a-kind guitar pedal with meticulously designed original circuitry.

Each and every dopecrumb features the following:
-Switchable true or JFET based buffered bypass via PCB switch. This allows the pedal to be placed anywhere on a pedal board without worry. Place a dopecrumb at the beginning of your effects chain without issues involving parasitic capacitance found in long or poor quality guitar cables.
-Reverse and over-voltage protection.
-Authentic Fender style jewels provide visual feedback on power and bypass status.

Internally, there are two amplifier topologies available via a PCB-mounted switch. “Half Stack” and “Full Stack” are your choices, with the latter injecting a pair of matched current sources to create an additional +40dB of gain with softer clipping. There are also two modes of feedback to choose from, Bacon or Sausage, with each offering slightly different gain and frequency response characteristics.

Whether you want to just get your entire rig a bit louder and beefier, or you want to drive your compositions right into the eardrums of your listeners, the Short Stack JFET Booster Preamp has got you covered. We dive in and check it all out in our demo below, so you can hear the differences in the topologies and feedback, and just how it can vary your sound overall. We love this first creation from Whimsy Machines, and can’t wait to check out more from them soon – head to their website for more info, and get your Dopecrumb on!
