With the release of the D1 High-Fidelity Stereo Delay last year, the folks at Walrus Audio introduced us to their line of Mako Series pedals, and we were quite thrilled. What better way to follow up a delay effect than with a reverb, right? Today’s pedal, the R1 High-Fidelity Stereo Reverb, continues the high-end sound and functionality of the D1, with a slew of reverb choices that will suit just about anyone’s needs, and a boatload of options to go along with it.
The R1 is an extremely powerful and versatile multi-function reverb that can quickly go from small intimate room sounds to massive washes of experimental euphoria with six customized, studio-quality programs – Spring, Hall, Plate, BFR, RFRCT (Refract), and Air. Every program can be tuned and tweaked and then saved to one of nine on-board presets. The R1 boasts a volume swell effect that can be applied to any program, sustain and latching momentary features, stereo in and out, MIDI control, and up to nine on-board presets (128 via MIDI).
A couple things that really stand out here for us are the “X” knob and the “Tweak” knob, and here’s why. With X, you get a different parameter to play with, depending entirely on which reverb program you’re currently in. These include controlling glitch, shimmer, changing tonal structure, adding in grit and more. The Tweak knob lets you control Rate, Depth and Pre-Delay in the blink of an eye, essentially providing three parameters to control in one section. Brilliant.
