If you’re a fan of Delay pedals in even the slightest amount, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve heard of )or played, or own) the Boss DM-2 Delay. An analog echo pedal from the early 80’s, it is revered by many as the quintessential delay pedal, due to its warmth and “bucket brigade” analog tone. Boss‘ lineup of Waza Craft pedals bring this classic back to life, in the form of the DM-2W Waza Craft Delay, re-creating all the favorite delay sounds from a vintage gem, and adding a couple more as well.
Using 100-percent analog circuitry, the DM-2W Delay’s Standard mode nails the lush sound and 20-300 ms delay range of the original DM-2. Flipping into Custom mode instantly changes the sound character to a cleaner analog tone with over twice the available delay time. The Repeat Rate knob adjusts the delay time, maxing out at 800ms in Custom mode. The Echo knob lets you dial in the perfect volume of the delay effect, while Intensity adjusts the number of repeats present.
There’s an Output jack, which mixes both your clean signal and the delay into one output, or you can split these two by utilizing the Direct Out jack. Run each of these into two different amps, for a wider, stereo feel. There’s also a Rate jack, where you can connect an external expression pedal to control the Delay Time hands-free, which always leads to important musical discoveries.
We love the sound of the original DM-2, and the DM-2W Waza Craft Delay is right on par in that regard. Keeping the sound of the original in tact, while adding in a couple more options, is right in line with the rest of the Waza Craft lineup, and we love it. Plus, this one is way more affordable than a vintage unit, and will require less upkeep and maintenance, as it is built in typical Boss fashion: like a tank. Check out our demo below to hear this beauty in action, it’s an excellent delay for players of all genres.
