We simply cannot get enough phaser around here, and when it comes from a vintage unit thats coveted by players across the world, that makes it even better. Today, we’re tasking a look at a simple but powerful phaser, one with a great history and even better tone: the Small Stone Phaser from Electro-Harmonix. While this particular iteration is a bit different, the Small Stone has been a go-to phaser pedal on many pedalboards for decades.
The Small Stone, originally released in the ’70s, is a multi-stage phase shifter with an extra stage for feedback. Mix up your tone by flipping the Color switch, and change the speed at which your phaser modulates with the Rate knob. That’s all there is to it – the controls have remained constant through the Small Stone’s many iterations. This Russian-made version came in black or green enclosures, depending on which version you got. This green one is an absolute tank of a pedal, solid and sturdy as they come, and, as you can clearly see, built to last for years and years.
Fairly basic at first glance, there’s a lot going on with the Small Stone Phaser, and these Russian Sovtek versions are some of the most sought-after in the world. We love the range of the speeds you can get, and the 2 color options just make it that much more creative and inspiring. Another vintage gem from Electro-Harmonix has graced us with its presence, and we’re nothing but smiles about it. Check out our demo below to hear this one in all it’s Cold War glory – if you come across one at a reasonable, price, be sure to pick it up, you won’t be disappointed.
