Ahh, the Phaser pedal. One of the most loved/hated effects out there, for some reason – I mean, people either LOVE phase shifting, or they HATE it with a passion. Not a lot of in between on this one – we, however, cannot get enough of it. From vintage units to complicated modern machines, adding in some phaser effect changes any rig or tone, and almost always for the better, in our opinion. The Hochstrasser Electronics Centrifuge is an analog phaser with a simple control section and tons of bold modulation – let’s check it out!
As you can see, the Centrifuge has just 2 knobs and 2 switches, making it essentially a plug-n-play effect. Based on the rare Maestro MP1 phaser from decades past, this is an OTA-based phase shifter. Speed determines how quickly the phase shifting modulates, while Peak adjusts the amount of resonance in the circuit. The range in the circuit here goes from a subtle coloring to being an almost vocal effect.
As for the toggle switches, the one on the left, Mode, functions as a phaser in the top position, and as a pitch-shifting vibrato in the down position. The Stages switch lets you alternate between 5 phase shift stages when up, and 6 when flipped down. Experimentation is key with these switches and knobs, making a seemingly simple pedal hold a vast amount of opportunity and wonder.
Ranging from slow and undulating modulation to high-speed, Leslie-esque whirring, there’s not much in the modulation department the Centrifuge Analog Phaser can’t accomplish. We love all the effects we’ve ever encountered from our friends at Hochstrasser Electronics, and this beautiful creature is no different.
