Seeing as this was one of the oddest, most dysfunctional and, let’s be honest, frightening years in the existence of the Earth, we wanted to send everyone off into 2021 rocker-style, in the form of the Electric Beard Fuzz from our friends at Radio Mule. Following in the footsteps of their Red Petal Fuzz we checked out earlier this month, this fuzz-filled freak combines 2 classic fuzz sounds, the Big Muff and the Super Fuzz, and lets you blend their circuits to taste. Let’s what what this powerhouse pedal is all about…
Starting with the high-impedance MOSFET input, the Sustain knob controls how much signal hits the parallel clipping circuits. this will produce a range from mild overdrive to full on raging fuzz. The Blend control allows you to mix as much of either fuzz circuit into the sound as you like, from a warm, wooly fuzz based on a black Russian Big Muff to an octave fuzz, inspired by the old Super Fuzz pedals.
The Tone knob controls a typical Big Muff tone stack; all bass to the left, all treble to the right. The Mids control shifts the tonal center of the tone stack, controlling the the body of your sound. The output stage is tuned to be exceptionally loud, giving you plenty of volume to experiment with blended, low-gain fuzz sounds and still boost the front end of your amplifier.
No need for toggle switches, MIDI control or a manual the size of War & Peace here. The Radio Mule Electric Beard Fuzz is one tough customer, but a fairly easy one to figure out and dial in. Low, doom-y grumble, fat walls of distortion and all the output level you could want: the Electric Beard covers all your bases.
