We love new and innovative sound-making machines, as do lots of musicians, but today’s piece of gear is something we weren’t familiar with at all. The Colour Palette from Lottie Canto is an electric Kalimba, an African instrument typically made of a wooden soundboard with steel keys. This new, modern version features on board effects, and allows you to plug it into an amp or interface. Let’s check it out!
The Colour Palette has just three dials, making it pretty easy to get a great sound with minimal effort. The first Mode dial lets you select from 8 effect modes, identifiable by their color. In each mode, the Adjust knob controls a different parameter:
BLUE: Reverb; ADJUST: Reverb Size
INDIGO: Shimmer Reverb; ADJUST: Reverb Size
PURPLE: Modulated Reverb; ADJUST: Reverb Size
PINK: Parallel Reverb and Delay; ADJUST: Delay Time
ORANGE: Slapback Delay; ADJUST: Delay Time
CORAL: Delay with Repeats; ADJUST: Delay Time
PEACH: Modulated Delay; ADJUST: Delay Time
YELLOW: Shimmer Delay; ADJUST: Delay Time
The Mix knob controls the amount of the effect present, and there’s a single 1/4″ mono output on the real panel for connectivity. The Colour Palette works well as a standalone device, and plays well with effects pedals, too. Consisting of a 17-key C major scale, this usually acoustic instrument has been given electronics, a contact microphone and has been placed in a standard size aluminum pedal enclosure. We decided we need to show off what the Colour Palette does on its own, as well as with other effects, so we’ve got a couple a demo videos for you below.
