JHS Pedals PG-14 Paul Gilbert Signature Distortion

You probably know Paul Gilbert from the bands Racer X and Mr. Big. Or, maybe from the G3 Tour and G4 Experience. Or the countless guitar magazine covers. Or the Beatles cover band Yellow Matter Custard. Or the extremely unique Ibanez Fireman guitars he plays and is frequently pictured with. Whatever the case may be, there’s no doubt he’s well-known at the top of the current guitar chain of players, and we’ve got something special of his today. Paul teamed up with a certain Kansas City-based outfit you may have heard of to create the JHS Pedals PG-14 Paul Gilbert Signature Distortion. Let’s have a look-see, shall we?

Designed specifically to Paul’s specs, the PG-14 is a unique distortion and overdrive pedal that adds the ultimate dirt channel to your amplifier. The heart of this circuit is a FET-based distortion engine that emulates the touch, feel and response of a pushed tube amp. The Volume, Drive and Tone controls act as they should, but the other three knobs really let you dial in some special tones.

Push is the amount that the input signal is pushed, basically acting as a powerful preamp hitting the front of the “FET” amplifier. This one works in conjunction with the Drive knob as well. There’s also Mid, which controls the gain of the mid frequencies, and Mid Freq, which selects the range that the Mid knob controls, from 400Hz to 7.5kHz. Turn to the left for low-mids, or the right for high-mids.

The active mid-frequency preamp is located at the front of the FET circuitry, giving you a really wide sweep of tonal possibilities, no matter what guitar or amp combinations you happen to be using. The PG-14 is a warm, hard-hitting effect that sounds great from the instant you plug it in. We’ve got a demo video for you below, and if you’re expecting to hear any guitar playing that’s in the same galaxy as Paul’s, you need to look at actual videos of Paul. We run through a bunch of different settings, and the signal is going through a Strymon Iridium PLUS a Benson Monarch and a Supro 1970RK Keeley Custom amps, for a round, bold and tasty drive sound. Thanks to JHS Pedals for letting us check this guy out, and to Paul Gilbert for making us all feel inferior for all these years. 🙂 Enjoy the demo, cheers and stay safe!
