Boss OD-200 Hybrid Drive

The 200 Series of pedals from Boss really take a ton of sonic options and smash them together into ergonomic, comfortable and pedalboard-friendly enclosures, all without sacrificing any functionality or tone. Following in the footsteps of the DD-200 Digital Delay, we move into dirt territory with the Boss OD-200 Hybrid Drive. This yellow beast gives you 12 drive modes, 15 boost types, series/parallel gain paths and much more, all powered by hybrid analog/digital circuitry. Lots to get into here, let’s have look-see…

The Drive modes are the stars of the show with the OD-200 – why don’t we have a look and see what they can do:

Overdrive – Natural tube-style overdrive with asymmetrical clipping
Blues – Highly expressive overdrive sound with wide tonal range
Scream – Smooth overdrive sound with mid-focused tone
Cntr OD – Mild drive sound modeled on the Klon Centaur
X-Drive – Next-generation overdrive that uses BOSS’s Multi-Dimensional Processing (MDP) for enhanced string separation, increased clarity, and expressive dynamic response
Dist – Cutting distortion that’s ideal for a wide variety of styles
X-Dist – Distinctive distortion that uses MDP tech for a superior playing experience that’s unattainable with analog distortion pedals
Stack Drive – Iconic British stack sound, with range from sparkly clean to a thick vintage roar
Fat Dist – Thick, tight distortion sound that’s ideal for riffs and solos
Brown – Lead sound inspired by the original British stack amp, with higher gain and razor-sharp definition
X-Metal – Wide-ranging modern sound powered by MDP, with superior clarity and string definition even at the highest gain settings
Fuzz – Bold fuzz sound with big, round tone and rich sustain

You can use these incredible modes in conjunction with the powerful Boost section, which provides you with 15 different switchable boost circuits, for unlimited possibilities. The tones produced by the OD-200 give you enhanced definition, clarity, and dynamic response, all while utilizing an integrated gate circuit, for a clear and quiet signal when you’re not playing. Full of options but easy to use, the quick Level, Drive and three-band EQ controls allow you to get gorgeous, useable drive sounds in seconds as well.

In addition to your real-time control settings, the OD-200 Hybrid Drive gives you access to an additional 127 presets (!), easily accessible via footswitch or MIDI. The sound quality is unmatched, as you’d expect, with 32-bit AD/DA, 32-bit floating point processing, and 96 kHz sampling rate. Full MIDI I/O is provided with mini TRS jacks, and a Micro USB jack is available for firmware updates as well. So much going on here, this one is a manual reader, for sure, but we’re going to show you some of the functionality and our favorite settings in the demo below, so be sure to check it out!
