EarthQuaker Devices Pyramids Stereo Flanger

Flanger is one of those effects that can be deeply loved or vehemently despised by musicians all over the globe, but we’d be puzzled to find many that wouldn’t have at least SOME fun with today’s powerful pedal. The EarthQuaker Devices Pyramids Stereo Flanger features five presets, eight flanger modes, tap tempo, tap subdivision, a multi-function Modify control, positive and negative Feedback, and a variable Mix control, and that’s just for starters. The rabbit hole is large and deep with this one, time to dive in….

The heart of Pyramids lies in the 8 flanging modes: Classic, Through-Zero, Barber Pole Up, Barber Pole Down, Trigger Up, Trigger Down, Step and Random. For each of these modes, the Modify knob has a different function, from tone control to sensitivity adjust to delay time and more, opening up each mode in a different way. Manual sets the delay time of the modulated signal, Rate controls the LFO’s speed and Width sets the frequency range of the LFO sweep.

The Mix knob acts as a volume control for the modulated signal, while Feedback works as your regeneration control parameter. There’s a Rate & Tap toggle switch as well: “Normal” (center position) is 1:1. The tempo you tap in is the tempo Pyramids will spit out. In “Slow” (left position), the tempo you tap is divided for a slower sweep. Set it to “Fast” (right position), and the tempo you tap is multiplied and delivers a faster sweep. The Tap/Trigger footswitch is a tap tempo control for most modes, but in Trigger Up and Trigger Down modes, this footswitch triggers the effect whenever it is pressed.

You also have access to 5 presets – EQD has loaded these up for you, but you can alter and create them to suit your needs any way you wish. The Stereo field the two outputs create is unrivaled, engulfing the room or your headphones in an auditory experience like no other (sounds so good in a Wet-Dry-Wet setup). In the extensive demo we did below, we run through each of these modes to hear how they differ, check out the presets and use an expression pedal for the Manual parameter, for on-the-fly changes and exploration. If you weren’t a fan of flanger before, you just might be after hearing the EarthQuaker Devices Pyramids Stereo Flanger….
